    CEM-Funded Conference Participation

ogden s picPolitical Science Professor Suzanne Ogden and PhD student Chow Bing Ngeow attended the Wuhan University International Conference on Chinese-Style Democratization in November 2009. About 80 well-known scholars on China participated. The conference discussed the different ways in which the Chinese think about "democratization," especially compared to Western liberal democrats. According to Professor Ogden, "Chinese thinking is shaped by a variety contextual and historical factors, which make it virtually impossible for them to see multiparty democracy and one-man-one-vote national-level elections in the same way we do. It was a fascinating conference, and we are deeply indebted to the CEM for partial travel support  through the BIE grant."

They served as co-chairs of the day-long conference and participated in a panel discussion. In addition, the professors attended the 2009 “Journal of Marketing Science” Annual Conference and Doctoral Consortium of Chinese Marketing, in Tianjin, China, where they presented their paper on “Factors influencing Chinese youth consumers’ acceptance of mobile marketing,” coauthored with Professor Andy Rohm, which won a Best Conference Paper Award. They also visited five of the top research universities in China, and four companies and industry associations related to mobile marketing and telecoms in China.
