OLKC 2010 will be holding a doctoral consortium prior to the main conference. The consortium will focus on discussing students’ thesis research. Paper sessions will be limited to doctoral students who have had an abstract describing their thesis research reviewed and accepted by the consortium faculty. The panels and social events will be of general interest and will be open to any and all doctoral students attending OLKC 2010.
Purpose
The purpose of the OLKC 2010 Doctoral Consortium is to help doctoral students further develop their dissertation research with a focus on getting the research completed successfully and ultimately published in academic journals.
All students accepted to the consortium and not already presenting a paper at the conference will be given the opportunity to present their consortium paper at the conference in a “research-in-progress” track. Consortium participants therefore are expected to register for, and participate in, the main OLKC conference. This provides another opportunity to learn about what is current in the area of organizational learning and knowledge research, as well as to network with a wide range of academic colleagues from many different countries.
The consortium is designed to facilitate constructive feedback and discussion around the literature, theory, ideas, concepts, frameworks, methods, and/or data analyses that you are developing for your dissertation. The major part of the workshop will involve group discussion of your papers, facilitated by the consortium faculty. Consortium participants will be required to read and constructively review a paper from a fellow participant, providing practice in being a reviewer as well as insight into the reviewing process.
In addition to providing a rich learning experience, the Consortium will provide opportunities for networking with peers from other institutions and countries.
Applying for Participation
Submissions are invited from any doctoral student who is working on a dissertation in the areas of organizational learning, knowledge management, or intellectual capital from a social sciences, organizational, or business perspective.
The purpose of the consortium is it to provide a sounding board for students who are far enough along in the dissertation process to have formulated a research project, yet not so far along that the research is essentially complete and thus could not benefit from feedback. Therefore we are looking for papers reporting dissertation research that is planned or in progress. Applicants should have successfully defended their dissertation proposals by the summer of 2010, although they need not have defended their proposals before the application deadline.
To apply, please send an extended abstract of no more than 1000 words by January 15, 2010 to the Doctoral Consortium Chair, Professor Yolande Chan, Queen’s University (ychan@business.queensu.ca), and a letter of recommendation from your dissertation advisor. Please note that your submission should be sole-authored. Co-authored submissions will not be considered. In addition, please describe in no more than 300 words:
- The key challenges you are facing or questions you may have regarding your research
- A brief statement about what you hope to gain from attending the consortium
- The current stage of your doctoral thesis. Preference will be given to those who are at earlier stages of their research
Your application will be evaluated based on the quality of your proposed research, its potential significance and contribution to the field, the potential contribution you are expected to make to the consortium, and the potential benefit of the consortium to your research and professional development. You will be notified as to whether or not you have been accepted by February 28, 2010. If accepted, you will be expected to write a short, sole-authored paper (4000 word upper limit) describing your research, to be sent to Professor Chan by April 30, 2010.
All participants will be expected to have read the papers of the other participants and be prepared to offer constructive criticism. To ensure adequate time for all to prepare, it is crucial that you submit your papers by the April 30, 2010 deadline.
General Interest Panel Guidelines
The consortium is intended to provide insight into what follows the completion of the student’s dissertation – your first faculty appointment and the life of a new professor. We will hold panels in the afternoon of Friday, June 4, to address some of the issues you will face as you begin your academic career, including:
- Finding your first faculty position
- Building a successful academic career
- Teaching
- Research
- Service
- Getting published
- Targeting a journal
- Preparing a manuscript
- Understanding the review process
- Managing revisions and rejections
This afternoon session will begin with lunch at noon. It is open to all doctoral students attending OLKC 2010 including, but not limited to, those attending the consortium.
